Paul is standing in chains.
He’s been arrested, falsely accused, and imprisoned for over two years. Now he’s standing in front of a room full of governors, military commanders, and a king—some of the most powerful men in the Roman world.
If there was ever a moment to defend himself, this was it.
Instead, Paul tells his story.
But here’s what struck me this week: his story was never about him.
Yes, he talks about his past. He was a Pharisee. He persecuted Christians. He had a blinding encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus.
But every part points somewhere else.
His credentials point to Jesus. His failures point to Jesus. His conversion points to Jesus. His future points to Jesus.
Paul understood something every Christian needs to remember.
The power of your testimony was never about how interesting your story is. It’s about how clearly your story points to Christ.
Testify to Jesus
We tend to disqualify ourselves for the wrong reasons.
Some of us think we don’t have much of a testimony because we didn’t come to Christ out of some dramatic wreck of a life.
Others think our testimony is too messy. So we bury it.
Paul wrecks both excuses.
He didn’t glorify his past. But he didn’t hide it either. Why? Because the darker the backdrop, the brighter the grace of God shines against it.
Your testimony was never meant to impress people with where you’ve been. It was meant to leave them amazed by what Jesus has done.
Every Christian’s testimony — no matter how different — answers the same three questions:
- Who was I before I met Jesus?
- How did Jesus save me?
- How is He changing me today?
That’s it. That’s your story.
And if you’re wondering whether God can actually use your story—look at where Paul was standing when he told his.
Not a church. Not a room full of people who already believed.
He was in chains, in front of the very people who could execute him.
Even there, he wasn’t fighting for his freedom.
He was making much of Jesus.
May the same be true of us.
